Seems something about the power and success - and maybe stress - associated with those things press a button in the psyches of the men in high office. Consider what an election is like. It's basically a very competitive game. A lot of politicians start out as lawyers, and I think a lot of lawyers probably see cases the same way: a very competitive game where they'll do anything to win. Once they're in office they're easily bored with the daily grind, so they look to grind something else. As if having an affair weren't disgusting enough many politicians probably see having an affair as a kind of game--although a more open-ended one. The game becomes keeping the affair hidden, pulling the wool over the voters' eyes. I bet this is really helping you see politicians in an even better light than you were.

Since someone else mentioned Robin Williams, I think the funniest line in The Birdcage is when Gene Hackman's character says, "Don't tell me John Major doesn't have something on the side." When the movie came out it was funny because so few of us could imagine John Major having an affair.

A few years later it was even funnier when we discovered John Major was having an affair!Christopherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06964382893041274710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34591549.post-37801175900534474652009-09-03T03:40:14.736+10:002009-09-03T03:40:14.736+10:00Re: Alan Burnett's comment. Times have changed and I get the distinct sense the women have leapt on the infidelity bandwagon as much as men - well, okay, maybe not as much, but they seem to be catching up. So I guess the question is, irrespective of where it starts, what is it about infidelity per se? Boredom, power? Both seem to be a big factor in the "why". Think about natural instincts in the animal kingdom. The male hunts down the female, impregnates her, and then moves on, while the female nurtures the children. The Human being has been fighting forever to curb their natural instincts, some do it and some don't, but I say that any man, no matter how faithful and loving can be tempted to the point of cheating.
